I arrived at Xi’an train station this morning on the night train from Beijing. The hostel offered to pick me up for free, which of course I couldn’t refuse. So as promised three people were waiting for me with a sign that had my name on it.

Such a sign is crucial, because of course dozens of people will greet you with “Hello my friend, do you need taxi / hotel”. My name is not very common, so I don’t have to worry about the kind of folks who hold up a “Mr Smith” sign every day waiting to catch one.  So far so good.

The hostel crew are still waiting for a few other guests and so one of them moves me to a less crowded position and chats with me for a while. But then she goes back to the meeting point, leaving me alone. I’m a grown up of course, so I can be alone, but I still felt like a sitting duck for beggars, annoying sales types and … potential scammers.

And so they approach me one by one, the usual suspects: people holding bank notes with a look on their face that suggests they want more, people trying to sell maps and other stuff I don’t need. The first category doesn’t respond quickly to a polite but firm “no”, nor to it’s Chinese equivalent or body language for that matter. I took them an uncomfortable 30 seconds on average to leave me alone.

In the mean time, almost a sort of queue had formed and after I politely tell the next person in line that I’m waiting for someone, he says: “I know, I’m from the hostel”. Still in paranoia mode I wasn’t sure if I could trust him, but we had a pleasant conversation about the hostel, possible tours, sights, how to buy train tickets etc. I also explained that I needed a train ticket to Shanghai and he said that could be arranged at the hostel for a small fee. Very genuine, not the least bit suspicious.

We also talked about scams; how everyone in Beijing seems to want to take you to their art gallery (watch how it worked on Kevin Rose, while Tim Ferriss was laughing at him). I told him that I should probably buy a T-Shirt with “No thanks, no taxi, no money, no art galleries.” written in Chinese.

A little while later I realized that “bragging” about my ability to detect a scam, was asking for it.

Then he apologized and went to the hostel crew. Or at least he got very close, as it was difficult to see with all the people in the area.

When he came back he told me that it was easiest if he bought the train ticket for me now and give it to me at the hostel. This raised some alarm bells, but I hesitantly decided to go along with it and handed him the exact fare (about €50). He then left to buy the ticket and his colleague picked me up to drive to the hostel.

By this time I felt terrible and not just because of sleep deprivation, hungriness and general sense of discomfort waiting alone at an unpleasant train station. Of course he could be speaking the truth, but the alternative theory in my head was that he actually faked being a staff member. It would have been a phenomenal scam, a solid piece of social engineering, but quiet doable, because of the physical distance between me and the hostel staff. Chinese hostels tend to have a lot of staff. I was never introduced to him through the girl who held the sign with my name on it. The part where he “pretented” to chat with the other staff members really added to the brilliancy of it all.

I was still – ever optimistic – hoping for the best, but counting on the worst. I once fell into a two person Tuc Tuc driver & Commision Shop scam in Bangkok, but that didn’t cost me anything but time, and was actually kind of fun once I figured it out and tried to negotiate it. I lost my wallet twice during my travels, with fairly limited damage (<€50), but discomfort.

I quickly reviewed my Lonely Planet for mentions of this type of scam, but I could only find the art gallery and expensive tea house scams, plus a general warning that people will try anything to make a quick buck.

So I comforted myself in knowing that the damage was fairly limited at less than half a day wages, that – contrary to what happened in Bangkok – I was not specifically warned about it in a guide book (that I planned on reading just about when it happened) and that I could always describe it as “highly sophisticated social engineering” (as opposed to me just being stupid and naive).

Why did I give him the money? Probably because I instinctively trusted him, despite my intelligence and experience warning me. Can I trust my instinct?

Anyway, the room wasn’t ready yet, so I went for a nice walk for a couple of hours. Guess who greeted me at the hostel when I came back?

Anyway, it could have ended badly, so don’t try this at home!

Het visum heb ik via Internet aangevraagd en is geheel zonder tussenkomst van stempels binnen een etmaal goedgekeurd. Daar kan de IND nog een puntje aan zuigen. Ik heb een bankrekening geopend (bijna helemaal via Internet) en online een verzekering geregeld (mijn Nederlandse verzekering kan ik met terugwerkende kracht opzeggen als ik minimaal 3 maanden werk). Eenmaal in Australië moet ik via Internet een sofinummer aanvragen en fysiek een SIM-kaart voor mijn telefoon kopen.

Omdat ik niet hou van jetlags, het niks extra kost, ik er nog niet geweest ben en het erg de moeite waard schijnt te zijn, ga ik eerst vijf dagen naar Bangkok. Om precies te zijn, ga ik eerst met de ICE (geboekt bij het nieuwe NS Hispeed) naar Düsseldorf, dan met een overstap in München naar Bangkok en een paar dagen later van Bangkok naar Melbourne.

Nu moet ik nog de belastingtelefoon bellen om te kijken of ik goed begrepen heb hoe de loonbelasting, premies volksverzekeringen en huur-toeslag precies op mij van toepassing gaan zijn. En zeker niet onbelangrijk is dat ik nog het fijne moet leren over het graven van AOW gaten; met andere woorden onder welke omstandigheden ik genoeg binding met Nederland op sociaal, economisch en juridisch gebied heb.

Ook interessant is artikel 86 lid 1 van de Wet Gemeentelijke Basisadministratie, dat stelt dat als ik “naar redelijke verwachting gedurende een jaar ten minste twee derden van de tijd buiten Nederland zal verblijven“, ik me bij de gemeente moet uitschrijven. Dit kan ik echter niet van tevoren weten en navraag bij de gemeente Utrecht leerde mij dat als er een moment komt dat ik het wel zeker weet, het niet meer relevant is omdat het artikel niet met terugwerkende kracht geld. Altijd als ik dit soort schitterende staaltjes wetgeving tegenkom, overweeg ik weer even om rechten te gaan studeren.

Om me goed voor te kunnen bereiden op de komende job-hunt en om een al te zware cultuurshock te voorkomen, heb ik het boek Living and Working in Australia van David Hampshire besteld en een workshop bijgewoond over solliciteren en werken in het buitenland. Sowieso kan het geen kwaad om het boek Allemaal Andersdenkenden van Geert Hofstede in het achterhoofd te houden.

Qua onderdak ga ik voor mix van hostels en Couch Surfing. Dit laatste houdt in dat mensen hun bank beschikbaar stellen voor reizigers. Dit is goedkoper en vooral buitengewoon veel interessanter dan in hostels verblijven omdat je op die manier de lokale bevolking in hun meest dagelijkse omgeving aantreft.

Melbourne heeft een zeer uitgebreid openbaar vervoer systeem, met vooral veel trams. Ook kennen ze het fenomeen maandkaart. Tot slot heb ik in Seattle een echte LifeBook (Fujitsu laptop) gekocht aangezien een PC toch echt te groot en zwaar is om mee te nemen. Ik heb zelfs braaf BTW betaald op Schiphol.

Wanneer ik weer terug kom in Nederland hangt af van hoe leuk werk ik kan vinden en hoeveel zin en tijd ik daarna heb om rond te reizen. Ik hou jullie op de hoogte!

Daarna een spectaculaire treinrit van een dag door de Koper Valei: een soort Grand Canyon. Boven was het vrij koud, maar gelukkig geen sneeuw dit jaar. Vervolgens hebben we weer een paar dagen aan het strand gezeten, deze keer zonder regen en veel warmer. Na Creel is de temperatuur overdag niet vaak onder de 30 graden geweest. 

Deze week hebben we aantal steden bezocht, waarvan Guanajuato wel de meest spectaculaire was. Het is een middeleeuws stadje met allemaal kronkelende straten, waar je zonder kaart de weg beter kan vinden dan met kaart. Omdat de stad het verkeer niet aankon hebben ze een stuk of tien tunnels door het centrum gegraven, wat het doolhof gevoel compleet maakt.

Vanacht heeft onze bus ongeveer zeven uur door Mexico stad gezworven, op zoek naar een weg naar Oaxaca, waar ik nu ben. Ik binnenkort eens tegen alle advies in Mezkal proberen. Tequilla went nou eenmaal vrij snel De kerst gaan we doorbrengen op een zeer zuidelijk en hopelijk nog verlaten strand aan de Stille Oceaan. Kortom, ik vermaak me nog wel even.

The Bay Area is cool! Maandag avond kwam ik na een belachelijke lange vlucht en met slaaptekort aan in San Francisco. Dinsdag gratis pizza bij Mozilla Headquarters en een coole presentatie van Firefox 3. Daarna nog even naar de Google Campus gelopen, maar daar mag je stiekem niet komen dus dat duurde niet zo heel lang. En dan vinden ze Microsoft evil?

Woensdag Palo Alto (schijnt Europees te zijn…) bezocht en vooral Stanford University. Daar betaal je wel $45000 per jaar, maar dan heb je ook wat! Palmbomen, mediteraan achtige gebouwen, gigantisch veel groen en nog goed onderwijs ook.

Donderdag en vandaag Couch Surf  ik in Berkeley bij Sally en haar al even coole huisgenoten. Echt veel beter dan hostels. Gisteren heb ik een persoonlijke tour over de campus gehad en vandaag ben ik naar het begin van een conferentie over de milieuproblematiek van China geweest. Beste quote van C.S. Kiang over het tempo van ontwikkelingen: “If I miss one week in China, I am no longer expert”.
